best 9mm semi-automatic ambidextrous or left for home defense.?

I have a friend thats going to be a father soon and live in much less from the city. It's a lefty. What would be the best left-handed or ambidextrous 9mm semiautomatic he could get. that should be of good quality. so far I believe Ruger personal choice would be a Springfield Armory XD. I have a XD in .40 s & w and I love it. The XDS weapons are awesome! To avoid damaging the Glocks but I went out twice to buy a Glock and twice have found something better. It simply can not overcome the Glock grip in muck. The XD grip is great and have more security features and are fully ambidextrous.
