Celadon is only one of the beautiful glazes used in Chinese ceramics. The color comes from iron and channels on the tone of the putty to the sea of green. Also intended to reflect the wide range of greens found in jade. Usually green, shot high and is applied to the surface of white porcelain.
We must remember that Europe in the 17th century, porcelain was known for only a few examples from China. No one is sure of the true story behind the name â € Celadon €, but two most romantic stories of survival.
The first is that the French, who were captivated with this ceramic new and refined. The story goes that the name is derived from a pastor, the main character of a popular 17th Century, French pastoral novel, lâ € ™ Astra © and by Honora © dâ € ™ Urfa ©. In producing this style of early opera, the hero â € € œCeladonâ was characterized by a layer of pale green color of this layer is supposed to now identify the enamel jade green!
It was the French, which, in fact, not only gave us the name of that color, but also a whole range of other sublime colored glazes, still used as standards in the West to identify the important range of Chinese ceramic colors. Some of these names is known as â € € œFamille Jauneâ, ie family yellow glazes in which the predominant color is yellow, € â € œFamille Noir, or the family of glazes in black, â € œFamille € Gibert, family or pink and œFamille VERTEE € â €, or the range of green glaze.
The second story that persists is another romantic story, this time located in the Middle East. This jade green porcelain was highly prized in all the East, and we know from court records that the 1171 Salah al-Din (Saladin), Sultan of Egypt, sent as a gift, 40 pieces of this ware to Nur ed-Din, Sultan of Damascus. It is from the name of Sultan â € œSalah-ED-dina the name â € € € œCeladonâ is said to have been obtained.
This version of the two stories is thought to be the most likely, however, really is a case history that you prefer!
Wherever appropriate the name, the varnish is known as "Celadon" is today still as popular as ever with its elegant, the depth of cool, jade green
A very decorative pair of mirror image, Chinese Celadon table lamps.
The lamps in the form of a pale Celadon glaze and naturalistic handles fitted.
The lamps decorated with mirror shaped reserves and painted in polychrome enamels with subjects of Mandarin pheasants perched in peonies and birds water on a lotus pond. The original gilded copper lamp caps, standing in the well-carved custom made rosewood bases.
This pair of lamps and proportions were made around the turn of the 20th century and have Beena restored and rewired to its original state.
